Introduction
The present work is a list of the writings of the greatest scholars of the Sa-skya-pa tradition in Tibet, beginning with those of the great founder Sa-chen Kun-dga'-snying-po (1092-1158) and continuing down to the present century. Since it records the contents of many rare and unavailable oeuvres, it is a work of unique value for the study of Sa skya pa literature. For the most part it consists of a compilation made by the Venerable Khenpo Appey (Mkhan-po A-pad Yon-tan-bzang-po) in the early 1960s. In addition to using the Tibetan books he could find at the time, he also added a number of rare lists of writings from an earlier bibliographical compilation made by the great 'Jam-dbyangs Mkhyen-brtse'i-dbang-po (1820-1892). The Ven. Khenpo Appey was able to borrow this unique list, which was in the handwriting of Mkhyen-brtse dbang-po himself, from the Mkhyen-brtse mchod-dpon who was then still alive in Sikkim. Unfortunately this rare record by Mkhyen-brtse-dbang-po subsequently disappeared, and our only knowledge of its contents now derives from what Khenpo Appey included within his own compilation. Sometime after the Ven. Khenpo Appey completed his basic compilation, Mr. Losang Lhalungpa, then head of the "Office for the Preservation of Tibetan Religion and Culture" (Bod mi'i chos dang rig gzhung gces skyong khang), requested H.H. the Sakya Trizin to prepare and submit just such a bibliographical lististing to aid his work. Accordingly a new list was prepared. The Ven. Khenpo Appey's work was the fundamental source for the updated compilation - whatever new additions were made seem to have derived mainly from the POD CHEN DRUG GI 'BEL GTAM of Ngag-dbang-chos-grags (1572-1641) and the remarkable memory of the late 'Dar Grang-mo-che mkhan po. The original list as submitted by H.H. the Sakya Trizin in the mid-1960s is now lost and unaccounted for. The compilers too did not retain a copy for their own use. The present publication reproduces a recent manuscript copy by Rgan Chos-dar of a photocopy of a xerox belonging to Mr. E. Gene Smith. Without Mr. Smith's generosity, this important source for Sa-skya-pa literary studies would probably have remained lost and forgotten for many more years.
